Reviews:

In this wonderful album, Broekhuis, Keller and Schoenwalder, accompanied in this occasion by Raughi Ebert and Thomas Kagermann, present us with a live recording from their performance on January 16th, 2005, at the Dorfkirche Repelen. "The Diminished Song" was composed, arranged and performed by Bas B. Broekhuis, Raughi Ebert, Thomas Kagermann and Detlef Keller. The rest of the pieces were composed, arranged and performed by Bas B. Broekhuis, Raughi Ebert, Thomas Kagermann, Detlef Keller and Mario Schoenwalder. The concert was recorded live by Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock (Mind over Matter). The audio mastering and mix was done by Gerd Wienekamp (Raibow Serpent). The disk includes not only music, but also a computer track (PC) that shows pictures from the concert, in a slide show. The system minimum requirements are: Windows 95, Pentium III processor, 300 MHz, resolution of 800 X 600 (16-bit color depth), 32 MB RAM, CD-ROM drive, 16-bit sound card. The background music for the slide show was composed, performed and recorded by Raughi Ebert and Detlef Keller. Throughout the whole album, the artists combine their respective artistic influences very well, thus achieving that their music possesses an unusual personality, very fresh, capable of breaking the barriers between Contemporary Instrumental Music, Synth-Pop and Space Music.

We never know what to expect from Broekhuis, Keller & Schonwalder. The trio likes to surprise and astonish. It is in the austere ambiance of an intimate cathedral dimensions that they give a strange musical ‘’rendez vous‘’ to its faithful public. Strange, because unaccustomed, but once again Broekhuis, Keller & Schonwalder succeed in charming our sense with a finely worked out music, for the pleasure of our ears.
A melancholic piano, covers of a discrete chorus à la Vangelis, opens subliminal The Beginning. Melodious and enthralling, the keys flow with tenderness on a soft movement marked with invisible caresses on romantic breaths. A sequence with bass pulsations crosses this virtual choral that a serpentine piano decorates of a harmonious line. The tempo becomes animated a little more on random percussions, in a Schulze style, whereas a 2nd sequence emerges bringing more depth to the existent pulsations with sonority of electronic tablas. Superbly melodious, The Beginning crosses the melancholic breaths of a superb acoustic guitar and an afflicted violin, which pierce our heart at each listening. A soft track which opens a tender and melodious opus with accuracy. A soft guitar with a minimalist refrain composes the structure of Caravan of the Melancholy. Fluid and slightly rhythmic, the tempo is supported by strange sound effects which attract the hearing. Gradually, the title amplifies his measurement with a synth that contorts itself on intriguing moaning whereas the violin accompanies it in his delirious scheming. Guitar caresses our ears of sumptuous chords, in this passage where synth and violin circle like two lovers in numb.
Walking makes us discover the talents of Raughi Ebert on acoustic guitars. On a tempo with movements softly hammered of tenderness, Ebert pinches his cords with an overflowing sensitivity surrounds by a synth of orchestral depth and a tearful violin. A kind of Mexican space western with enough astonishing result. A superb limpid sequence undulates on heavy silence. Tablas break this serenity on a rhythm which takes form with drone pulsations. Magic Pure whirls in this frivolous atmosphere where tablas make dance the austere violin cords which spins in a swirl sound where; synth, piano, electric sitar and other sound effects circle around frenzy. A silky acoustic guitar, bluesy style opens The Diminished Song. As nimble as Steve Howe, Raughi Ebert astonishes by his virtuosity. The violin of Thomas Kagermann encircles the cords of Ebert which are pinches with resonance. And, when synth covers this movement with layers of tenderness, we are subjugated by the tenderness of The Diminished Song. As much The Beginning was a superb opening, as much The Diminished Song is a superb ending.
This cd contains a bonus section witch can be view on your pc.
An excellent initiative which should controls the piracy, as Detlef Keller and Raughi Ebert composed a new track, Visual, which goes superbly well within the atmosphere of Live @ Dorfkirche Repelen. A superb title on a moulding sequencer, a sensual tempo and a guitar à la Pink Floyd... Quite simply brilliant. For me, Live @ Dorfkirche Repelen is a successful small stroke of genius by Broekhuis, Keller & Schonwalder and their friends; Raughi Ebert and Thomas Kagermann. Slightly different from what we usually get from the German trio, who likes more hammering and striking music. This is a superbly melodious opus on hypnotic rhythms of Berlin School, with random corridors and stuffed of musical surprises which astonish and charm, as well by the depth as the impact which results from this. A Berlin School aromatized with an acoustic essence A great move. To get without fault at Manikin Records.

Sylvain Lupari for Guts Of Darkness the Home of Dark & Experimental Music

This release from 2006 features 60 minutes of tastefully dreamy electronic music.
Joining Bas Broekhuis (drums and percussion), Detlef Keller (synthesizer, laserharp, sequencer) and Mario Schönwälder (synthesizer, sequencer, and rainstick) for this live performance (at Dorfkirche Repelen, Germany, January 16, 2005) are Raughi Ebert on guitars and Thomas Kagermann on violin and voice.
Performed in a cathedral, this music bears a certain somber presence that, while devoid of any religious connotation, possesses a distinct reverence. That devotion is focused on the music itself, and honestly tends to get a bit lively.
Heavenly textures unfurl to cloud the air with atmospheric disposition. Piano passages wind through these tonalities, propelled by snappy percussion that maintains a respectful restraint as it delivers rhythms to the evolving harmonic. Sharper electronics emerge, joining in the grand design and imbuing the music with more pep. Not all the songs display this vigor, but even the softer pieces shimmer with an inner, subdued vitality. Guitars (of the acoustic and electric variety) provide a pleasantly romantic edge to the melodies. Slippery synthesizers accompany a passage of delicate acoustic guitar, generating a novel aspect that is remarkably engaging. Cerebral violin floats into the mix, deliberately contradicting traditional resonance normally attributed to this instrument with a modern flair.
With the exception of the final track, long-form compositions dominate this album. The harmonies surface and slowly mature while auxiliary embellishments gradually flesh out the structure with loving performances. The result is a lush panorama of dreamy tuneage which serves as a superb milieu for outward-bound introspection. This disc features a bonus slide show from the concert, with soundtrack by Ebert and Keller.

The friends in question this time are Bas Broekhuis, Raughi Ebert and Thomas Kagermann. A lovely piano melody gently floats above soft washes of synth in a rather Vangelis way. 'The Beginning' continues with a slow but insistent bass sequence and rather Schulzian drum flourishes, courtesy of Bas. A second sequence adds to the pulsating nature of the track. Melodic lead lines weave their spell, combining wonderfully with some lovely rhythmic acoustic guitar. By the ninth minute we get some gorgeous low violin playing. The five musicians are all working in perfect harmony without cluttering the soundstage at all, each adding just the right vital element to a perfect mix. A stunning opener.
'Caravan of the Melancholy' starts with a repeated refrain on the guitar mixing with subtle rhythms and haunting lead line. It all goes together in a rather hypnotic way. The low violin tones, once again, mix beautifully with the rest of synthesized sounds adding something of a wistful mystical quality. The sounds and sequences used on 'Walking' reminded me very much of Peter Bauman's 'Trans Harmonic Nights', especially the moody 'This Day' track. Here however we have the addition of some delicate guitar playing. Wispy little ethereal pads add a slightly haunting element. As we go on the pace quickens but this seems to intensify the beauty of the piece even more rather than upset the perfect balance of rhythm and melody so carefully crafted. It really is an exquisite number. We get straight into a sequence on 'Magic Pure'. Bas adds some more excellent rhythms and the violin once more weaves its spell.
A bass sequence falls into formation alongside the first 'The Diminished Song' starts with some gentle guitar playing followed by lovely washes of synth, a very relaxed rhythm giving this stunningly beautiful track a little extra movement. Violin returns nearer the end adding a perfect finishing touch. Now if you haven't got a PC that is where the entertainment ends but if you have you can access an eight minute slide show containing images of the concert accompanied by an additional piece of music called 'Visual' by Detlef Keller & Raughi Ebert. There are some excellent pictures including some lovely ones of the laser harp being played by Detlef. The music itself is haunting and slowly rhythmic with some excellent moody guitar work. The more I listen to this CD the more I think it is one of the very best Keller & Sconwalder related album I have ever heard. (David Law, Synthmusicdirect, GB)
